A fire in Northern Alberta earlier this year which destroyed roughly one-third of the town of Slave Lake — located in the heart of the Peace River oil sands deposits — was likely the result of arson, according to the Al- berta government, which conducted a five- and-a-half month investigation into the dis- aster (IOD May18'11). The province said the fire, which caused C$700 million (US$691 million) in dam- ages, was deliberately set and that investiga- tors have located the site where it was ignit- ed, although this is not being revealed to the public while the Royal Canadian Mounted Police conduct an investigation.
