Central Asia-focused Tethys Petroleum says electric logs indicated more than 100 meters of gross potential hydrocarbonbearing zones after its Kalypso exploration well in western Kazakhstan reached its targeted depth. Tethys said the zones appeared to be in shelf limestones of Carboniferous age, adding that hydrocarbon shows were also noted during drilling. "The nearest field which produces from similar Carboniferous shelf limestones is the Alibekmola field [being developed by Kazakhoil-Aktobe] some 250 km to the north in the pre-Caspian Basin subsalt," Torontoand London-listed Tethys said.
