摘要

Natural gas was still the oil industry's both- ersome stepchild when Oil Daily was launched 60 years ago. The first issue contained just one brief item related to gas, noting that oilman J. Paul Getty planned to build an aluminum plant in Arkansas that would use electricity generated from natural gas. In the following decades, however, natural gas would become increasingly important in the US and around the world. US gas production overtook oil on an energy-equivalent basis in the early 1990s, and although it seemed to be in irreversible decline by the early 2000s, the well-docu- mented shale gas boom of recent years has pushed US output to new highs of around 66 billion cubic feet per day. The US overtook Russia as the world's biggest gas producer last year, and there is even talk that it could soon start exporting LNG.
