Nippon Oil is considering speeding up the timetable for closing refining capacity, but has yet to make a final decision, a spokesman said Tuesday. He was responding to a report in the Nikkei newspaper Monday that said the new merged firm to be formed by Nippon Oil and Japan Mining Holdings will close a further 200,000 b/d of capacity by the end of March 2011, two years earlier than planned (IOD Mar.23,p4). "We are considering rescheduling to an earlier date but it's not decided yet," the spokesman said, adding that he did not know when a decision would be made. Plans are still on track to shutter an initial 400,000 b/d of capacity by March 2011, he said.
