The US Geological Survey (USGS) has dramatically reduced its estimate for the amount of technically recoverable, undiscovered conventional oil held in the federal National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A) and adjacent state waters. The new estimate of 896 million barrels is less than 10% of the estimate released in 2002, when the USGS reckoned the NPR-A held 10.6 billion barrels of oil. The reduction was made because data from recent exploration drilling in the area revealed that it is more prone to natural gas than oil.
