Norway wants to broaden emission controls on oil and gas production to include radioactive discharges, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) said Thursday.A report compiled by the NPD, the Pollu-tion Control Authority and the Radiation Protection Authority says measures to prevent the release of naturally occurring radioactive substances should be considered.Right now, the petroleum sector accounts for 3% of domestic discharges of environmentally hazardous substances to sea and has made "substantial improvements" over the past decade. Discharges of environmentally hazardous chemical additives from the Norwegian shelf have been cut by more than 99%, the report says.
