The New Zealand government said Friday that it plans to acquire and freely distribute seismic data to interested oil and gas players over the next three years. Energy Minister Gerry Brownlee said it will spend NZ$20 million (US$12 million) carrying out seismic in a bid to boost interest in the country's upstream. "The international oil exploration industry is showing increasing interest in New Zealand following initiatives to make new data freely available to companies wishing to explore here," Brownlee said. "This has translated into increased exploration expenditure and activities across frontier basins that have historically struggled to attract investment."
