What is General Motors thinking? GM's plan to sell the Opel Insignia as the Buick Regal in the United States, possibly as early as next year, makes no sense. How will GM get buyers to accept a car that essentially is a clone of the redesigned, elegant-looking 2010 Buick LaCrosse? First, a little background: The Opel Insignia is a beautifully styled sedan that also was engineered as the next-generation Saturn Aura, arriving in U.S. showrooms for the 2010 or 2011 model year. The Insignia was engineered to meet European and U.S. regulations. That was part of GM's grand plan to slash development costs by selling several rebadged Opel models as Saturns in the United States.
