BP: Coal's share of world energy hits 43-year high

Coal generated more than 30pc of global energy last year, up by 1pc from 2012 and the highest level since 1970, according to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2014. World coal consumption rose by 3pc on the year in 2013 to 3.86bn metric tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), ensuring that coal retained its status as the fastest-growing fossil fuel. But production growth slowed to an 11-year low, below the average expansion rate of 3.9pc over the last 10 years.
