With estimates that traffic congestion in Sydney costs community and businesses there more than $3.5 billion a year - a figure expected to double if existing infrastructure is not maintained and new ones built - funding transport infrastructure projects is seen as a priority. NSW is not alone in having underdeveloped infrastructure, although many would argue that it lags the most. Queensland is looking to rebuild after the devastating floods there and Victoria has had its fair share of infrastructure woes. Though different numbers have been bandied about, the federal government pegs the national infrastructure deficit at $770 billion, with $20 billion in avoidable costs by 2020 due to growing congestion in the cities.
