Experts have argued about whether semiconductor nanowires (NWs) grow via a liquid droplet or a solid particle of catalytic material. Frances Ross and colleagues at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center have demonstrated that under the same experimental conditions, an NW can grow via a liquid droplet and a solid particle.
