The ability to fragment peptides and use ion dissociation information to search a protein sequence database is at the core of proteomics analyses.Initially,dissociation was carried out through energy transfer via collisions of ions with an inert gas,that is,collision-induced dissociation(CID).More recently,Donald Hunt and coworkers at the University of Virginia developed electron transfer dissociation(ETD),which preserves posttranslational modifications on the peptides after fragmentation.
