Nucor’s DRI production pressures scrap prices

Nucor Corp.’s direct-reduced iron (DRI) plant in St. James Parish, La., has put significant pressure on U.S. scrap markets, helping to drag down ferrous scrap prices by around $100 per ton in February, according to the company’s top executive. The Charlotte, N.C.-based steelmaker’s production and use of DRI, which competes as an alternative raw material to scrap, was a “meaningful factor” in February’s scrap price plunge ( amm.com, Feb. 5), chairman, president and chief executive officer John J.
