Mine operators could be required to equip all coal-hauling machines and scoops with proximity-detection systems under a proposed rule aimed at preventing accidents in underground coal mines. “These systems provide audible and visual warnings, and automatically stop moving machines before miners are injured,” according to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), which proposed the rule to further address coal mining accidents.
