within the renal collecting duct (CD), adenylyl cyclase (AC)-derived cAMP plays a major role in the regulation of water and Na~+ transport by promoting the phosphorylation and/or increased plasma membrane abundance of aquaporin (AQP)2 (7, 15, 16, 36), urea transporters (17, 39), and the epithelial Na~+ channel (ENaC) (25, 33). To date, nine membrane-bound AC isoforms and one soluble AC isoform have been identified (3). Only three membrane-bound AC isoforms (AC3, AC4, and AC6) are expressed within mouse CD principal cells (35).
