Cultivation trial of Arnica montana wild accessions - results of the second year.

Arnica is a mountain medicinal plant which has been used for centuries to treat skin inflammations and blunt injuries. Morphological characteristics and drug yield of three alpine accessions (G.B. Paradisia-Aosta, Monte Bondone and Malga Juribello-Trento) were compared in an experimental trial carried out for two years in the surroundings of Trento, at 990 m a.s.l. The Monte Bondone accession, followed by Malga Juribello and G.B. Paradisia, showed the best results with a dry flower head yield of 33.4 g x m-2 and 3.9 g per plant. The morphological traits of the same accessions were on average: 33.4 cm of plant height, 11.7 cm of leaf length, 4.1 cm of leaf width, 3.2 stems/plant, 14.7 flower heads per plant, 7.1 cm in diameter for the main flower head, 19 ligulate florets on the main flower head, 25.2 cm of maximum diameter of the basal rosette, 5.7 basal rosettes per plant.
