Effect of different cultivation patterns on continuous cropping soil environment and cucumber growth.

Continuous cultivation obstacle is a major problem that affects the vegetable crop production in protected areas. Three cultivation patterns (CP), garlic-cucumber-cucumber-garlic (CP1), spinach/colewort-cucumber-tomato-spinach/colewort (CP2), and fallow-cucumber/garlic-cucumber-fallow (CP3) were used to evaluate the recovery effect of cultivation patterns on continuous cropping soil, soil fertility, population of microorganisms, and cucumber yield. Original soils were collected from a protected area with eight years' continuous cropping. Continuous cultivation pattern, fallow-cucumber-cucumber-fallow, was used as a control. All experiments were conducted in controlled pots. Total N, available N, P and K were analyzed using conventional methods. Soil microorganisms were counted based on a dilution plate method. Cucumber growth was recorded and yield was estimated. The results indicated that planting garlic and leafy vegetable could reduce soil salt and control fusarium, but increase the number of soil microorganisms. We drew a conclusion that leafy vegetable-cucumber-tomato and garlic-cucumber-cucumber could improve the composition of soil microbes, remediate continuous cropping soil and increase cucumber yield.
