Amerikohl mining six sites in Pennsylvania, delays Curry mine

Amerikohl Mining is producing thermalcoal at six surface mine sites in Pennsylvania, but hasplaced its proposed Curry surface mine on hold because ofthe decline in metallurgical coal prices and demand, JohnStilley, the company’s owner and president, said Tuesday.In business for more than three decades, the small Butler,Pennsylvania-based company has watched in recent years aselectric utilities retired older coal-fired power plants to complywith new US Environmental Protection Agency rules.Stilley, though, said in an interview Amerikohl is “positionedrelatively well,” pointing to the continued operationof several large coal plants such as Conemaugh, Keystoneand Homer City in central Pennsylvania.
