A Greek tragedy: Chemical demand down 40% from 2008 levels

The share of the European chemical industry in the world has halved in the last 20 years to about 18% in 2012, concomitant with the rise of Asia, particularly China. But with a size of about ?550-bn coming from nearly 29,000 companies -of which 96% are SMEs -employing 1.1-mn, and a trade surplus of more than ?50-bn, it still remains a sizeable industry.
