The fine chemicals industry is a small segment of the US1,800-bn global chemical industry,with a Value of about US90-bn.This puts the industry a distant third in terms of size,after commodity chemicals(US950-bn)and speciality chemicals(US750-bn).Unlike speciality chemicals,which are typically sold as formulated products,containing one or more ingredients,fine chemicals are distinct chemicals,manufactured on campaign basis,mostly by batch-processes,and sold largely within the industry on the basis of their chemical identity.
