Lurgi and Karlsruhe-based research institute to work together on project to turn biomass into fuels

With crude oil and natural gas becoming scarcer and more expensive every day,engineering consultancy firm,Lurgi is increasingly counting on fuels from biomass.In the future,gasoline and diesel could be produced in a new generation of biofuel plants,which can process all plant parts,as well as wood and plant waste,thereby ending interference with the food supply chain.With this in mind,Germany-based Lurgi and Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH (Research Institute Karlsruhe) have signed a cooperation contract for the first level of a pilot plant for fuel production from biomass.As the first of three steps,the Frankfurt-based plant contractor will build a pyrolysis plant,where biomass is processed to bio-crude oil,an intermediary for the production of synthetic fuels.As the second and third steps,the products from the pyrolysis process will be gasified and converted into syngas.This syngas is then used as a feedstock for synthetic fuels,the so-called designer fuels.
