A novel method was developed to fabricate vitrified bond cBN grinding wheels with high strength and grinding efficiency. CBN abrasives pre-oxidized at 900 degrees C for 60 min with thin B2O3 film were used as the starting materials for improving their bonding strength with the vitrified bond. Although the porosity is similar, higher flexural strength of 43 MPa could be obtained for the grinding wheels with pre-oxidized cBN abrasives, which were 1.5 times than that of grinding wheels with non-oxidized cBN abrasives (31 MPa). This was ascribed to the good structural bonding between the thin B2O3 film and Na-Al-B-Si-O glass bond matrix. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.
