Ambulatory Cystitis and E coli: Not So Simple Anymore?

The epidemic impact of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections has been well publicized. The same has been true for "flesh-eating bacteria." Listeria and influenza scares have been exposed just as their infectious compatriots. Although the United States has been slow to recognize another looming microbial threat, its time has come as well. Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherickia coli has become a problem in Europe and other international locales. A recent "Top Paper" and its accompanying editorial raise concerns about its presence in this country, but offer advice that should change the primary care approach to ambulatory cystitis.
