Wide input dynamic range cross-phase modulated wavelength conversion using an automatically controlled semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) power equalizer has been successfully demonstrated. An automatic gain/loss controlled (AGLC) circuit that we have developed controls two functions of the SOA, amplification and attenuation. By connecting the SOA equalizer to a cross-phase modulated (XPM) wavelength converter, we achieved a 14-dB enhancement of the XPM converter's input-dynamic range for a 10 Gbit/s transmission rate.
