Plain fatigue and fretting fatigue strengths of AC4CH aluminum alloy

Plain fatigue, fatigue crack growth and frettingfatigue tests were carried out using cast Al-Si aluminum alloy JISAC4CH-T6 as well as the forged aluminum alloy JIS 6061-T6.Plain fatigue strength of the cast aluminum alloy was lower thanthat of the forged alloy. The lower fatigue strength was attributedto casting defects such as pores in the cast aluminum alloy, whichenhanced fatigue crack formation. On the other hand, frettingfatigue strength of the cast aluminum alloy was almost equal tothat of the forged alloy. No difference of both tangential forcecoefficient in fretting fatigue and fatigue crack growth rates wereobserved between the two materials. The prediction of frettingfatigue lives for both materials were made on the basis of thefracture mechanics approach. The predicted lives were in goodagreement with the experimental results.
