This paper presents an innovative method for blast furnace lining thickness measurement using a 3D laser scanner and the image registration method. Taking advantage of high data throughput and large measurement range of a laser scanner, lining surface geometry of No.4 BF in China Steel Corporation was measured before and after the lining repair process. In order to obtain high precision measurement result, a data registration algorithm was developed to integrate both profiles based on rigid body transformation and the invariant features. Consequently, the quality of the gunning process can be evaluated and visualized by comparing the two surface profiles. Furthermore, by comparing mechanical dimensions with the measured profiles, residual lining thickness can be obtained. The proposed technology was found to be practical in blast furnace operation by providing valuable information for tracking the lining condition throughout its campaign life.
