In the overall scheme of things, the European lead-acid battery manufacturing sector isn't much— just 20 000 jobs, a few billion dollars in sales— who gives a damn? And if you want to kill an industry, just regulate it to death. That, it seems to me, is the unwritten mission of the powers that be within the European Commission who have chosen this inopportune moment to start a process which will make lead-acid battery manufacture in Europe uncompetitive at best and outlawed at worst (see feature page 35).
