Al-12Si alloys, having 0.8~2.0wt%TiH_2, were prepared by extrusion and then be foamed by induction heating with various heating rates and foaming times to discuss the influence of TiH_2 contents and foaming conditions on the characterization and mechanical property of Al-12Si alloy foams. The results revealed that larger expansion ratio could be obtained by increasing TiH_2 content, heating rate and foaming time. Shorter foaming time brings rounder pores with an average diameter in the range of 0-3mm. In contrast, longer foaming time causes polygon pores with an average diameter in the range of 3-6mm. A foam with a smaller expansion ratio and rounder pores provide a higher compression strength, on the contrary, a larger expansion ratio and polygon pores provide a lower compression strength.
