Effect of Sc additions on the mechanical properties in A201 aluminum alloy

摘要

Effect of Sc additions to the A201 casting alloy is studied. Although alloying with Sc has outstanding properties in most aluminum alloys, our preliminary results have shown that both yield and ultimate tensile strength decrease sharply. In this study, it is found that the main reason for this phenomenon is because that at the expense of the ternary Al-Cu-Sc W phase formation, the original strengthening phase θ' and/or θ" disappear. On the other hand, it is also found that small additions of Sc(<300ppm), can improve the ductility of the inherent brittle A201 alloy due to the high cleanliness, low hydrogen and oxygen content in the melt.
