Currently, there are three main approaches for detecting faults in geared systems: acoustic analysis, wear debris analysis and vibration analysis. The vibration-based detection has been the most popular monitoring technique because of its high effectiveness. Local fault detection in gears using vibration analysis has been a subject of intensive research. A plethora of methods has been proposed including: amplitude and phase demodulation, cestrum analysis, residual analysis, adaptive filtering, use of a model, inverse filtering, time frequency (TF) analysis 1317 and time-scale analysis.
