GE Sensing & Inspection Technologies, part of US-based GE Enterprise Solutions, has introduced a weld profile visualisation system that is based on phased array technology. The scarf monitoring system provides a real-time, on-line, accurate picture of both the inside diameter (ID) and the outside diameter (OD) profiles of scarfed, electronic resistance welded (ERW) pipes during the manufacturing process (Figure 4). This enables the scarfing process to be controlled in real time by identifying events such as tool drift and edging as they occur and, according to the firm, can significantly reduce the amount of scrap that is produced.
