The possibility of using the indirect method for assessing the competitiveness of active strains of lupine nodule bacteria to form the plant overground mass in their mixed inoculation by active and inactive strains has been investigated. This method was used for defining the competitiveness of four rhizobia lupine active strains. Two of them were highly competitive, while two others were middle and weakly competitive. To confirm the possibility of using the indirect method the estimation of the competitiveness of active strains of lupine nodule bacteria by the direct resistant method has been conducted. The both methods showed analogous results. The indirect method could be applied to characterize the competitiveness of lupine rhizobia when breeding new highly active strains, in particular.
