A novel buffer management scheme to moderate negative effects between TCP and UDP

摘要

Multiplexing both responsive and unresponsive flows, namely TCP and UDP respectively, in the same buffer leads both flows to negative effects in over-provisioned networks. In order to degrade their effects, a scheme of management with two separated queues works well. However, it become complicated setting some parameters such as allocating bandwidth for each queue. In this paper, therefore we will propose another scheme, a novel buffer management scheme which has one output queue with Head-of-the-Line (HOL) priority to moderate their negative effects on the differentiated services (diffserv) architecture. We explain the proposed method in detail and investigate the effectiveness of the method by evaluating packet transmission delay and loss probability of UDP packet and throughput of TCP in case where traffic in the network is over-provisioned.
