Through introduction of an identity layer in the protocol stack, the HIMALIS network architecture supports communication across heterogeneous network-layer protocols and addressing spaces, mobility (i.e., frequent changes of locators), and multihoming (i.e., using two or more locators for the same session). In this report, we describe the design and implementation of a multipath forwarding mechanism in the identity layer that can forward packets belonging to a session through different paths so that higher throughput, failure residence, load balancing, and resource optimization are achieved. The proposed mechanism is based on a packet-scheduling algorithm that uses the estimated values of available path bandwidth and latency as the input parameters, and is expected to work with any transport-layer protocol.
