Spinal codes are the new approach for rateless codes. Spinal codes are decoded by a dynamic search as well as convolutional codes which have a long constraint length. Near capacity performance of spinal codes is demonstrated. However, the error performance of spinal codes has not been studied enough. In this paper, the bit error rate of fixed rate spinal codes is examined by computer simulations. The error rate of fixed rate spinal codes is presented for rates from 1/15 to 8/9. A new method for symbol mapping is proposed to improve the bit error rate of high-rate codes.
