Time-variant wake vortex detection by the template matching method

Coherent laser radars can measure wind velocity from the Doppler velocity of scattered light by aerosols. Such radars are expected to be useful for vortex detection around airport areas. A wake vortex consists of two eddies and the interval between them gradually increases as time goes on. There are some cases where the fixed template for vortex detection we have developed does not correctly match spatial velocity distribution of the vortex. In the present paper, we propose a new template which consists of two sub-templates. The interval between these sub-templates is variable, and adjusted on each detection processing. The results of computer simulations show that the proposed method can detect vortex which the fixed-interval template cannot detect. Evaluation and further improvement of the algorithm with actually obtained field data remains to be done in the future.
