Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome as a complication of septic arthritis.

A 63-year-old woman underwent an elective arthroscopy of the right knee. She had a history of osteoarthritis and had taken paracetamol and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) prior to surgery. She was otherwise fit and well, with no evidence of renal disease or immuno-suppression. The procedure was uneventful and she was discharged the same day. One week after the arthroscopy, she developed septic arthritis of the right knee, with associated fever, pain and swelling of the knee, and neutrophilia. She was commenced on high-dose intravenous flucloxacillin and benzylpenicillin, and underwent arthroscopic washout of the knee.
