This paper describes a comparison of vowel perception under a white noise and under a complex tone at low SNRs. We used four types of vowels: natural vowels, vowels with constant amplitude and frequency modulation of natural vowels, vowels with constant frequency and amplitude modulation of natural vowels, and vowels with constant amplitude and frequency. Two types of noise were used: a white noise and a harmonic complex tone with the same frequency components as the vowels. Stimuli were produced by adding one of the vowels to one of the noises at low SNRs. The result suggests that the frequency modulation of the vowels affects vowel perception under a harmonic complex tone, and the amplitude modulation of the vowels does not.
