Many college students have a deep interest in English newspapers. They have cherished a strong desire to read English newspapers casually just as they read Japanese ones. Before long, however, they are forced to give up reading them against their will because of some problems causing them to face up to. One problem is that the language in English newspapers is not so easy for them to read as they expect to. Another one is that they sometimes feel a lack of political, economic, social, cultural and historical backgrounds of information. Third one is that they have not been taught how to read English newspapers, their characteristics, how they are organized and how headlines are written as well as special terms used in them. Last one is vitally concerned with the relative and objective level of readability in English newspapers. This analytic study is aimed at finding out some ingredients of difficulties in reading English newspapers, which students will have to get over when they begin to read and enjoy them.
