The subject of our special issue is to give an overview of the real role of ontologies in future Web-based industrial Enterprises. Several facts preceded the launching of this special issue. Before detailing them, we first note that the guest editors cover both industrial and academic communities: Airbus Group SAS, Toulouse, France and CRITT Informatique, Poitiers, France; LIAS/ISAE-ENSMA, Poitiers, France and IRIT/ENSEEIHT, Toulouse, France. The long and rich collaboration between our laboratories and industrial companies allows us gaining expertise in constructing ontologies and exploiting them in engineering domains. This expertise has been also leveraged in many international projects dedicated to the construction and publication of normalized ontologies. The PLIB project is one of these projects that has been standardized by ISO-13584. To capitalize this experience and share it over research community, we launched in 2010 a special issue on Contribution of Ontologies in Designing Advanced Information Systems in Data and Knowledge Engineering (DKE), Elsevier. This special issue received 65 papers. At that time, we realize that a research community has been formed around ontologies in information systems. To keep this dynamism, in 2012, we launched an International Workshop on Ontologies meet Advanced Information Systems (OAIS) that hold in conjunction with the East-European Conference on Advances in Databases and Information Systems (ADB1S). Both the DKE special issue and the OAIS workshop were mainly intended to academic researchers. To get a real feedback on the use of ontologies in industrial companies, we found that Computers in Industry Journal is the best venue for a special issue on ontologies in future Web-based industrial Enterprises.
