Development of Precast PC-slab with Loop Joint on Rational Orthotropic Plate Girder Bridge

The Toukai-Obu Highway Bridge is an I-beamgirder bridge with three girders that reduce its costcompared to conventional I-beam girder bridge, whichuse several girders. A prestressed concrete (PC) slabis used against a long span between girders. To reducethe constructional cost, the precast slab uses a loopjoint. We discuss the design and construction of thebridge and the strength tests on the loop joint. Anelemental test of joints verified that the loop jointhas sufficient strength because the concrete core issurrounded by the loop shaped R-bars. We alsoconsidered the effect of the structural parameters. Atest of a real scale model verified that the PC slabwith loop joints has sufficient strength and durability.
