New Turret Arm Improves Allegheny Ludlum Caster Operation

Better control of the continuous slab casting process with reduced costs were achieved with a caster upgrade undertaken by Danieli Automation at Allegheny Ludlum's Brackenridge, PA, plant. Principal products of the plant are flat-rolled stainless steel, electrical steel, and other specialty steel grades.At Brackenridge, four electric arc furnaces melt stainless and other specialty metals for subsequent refining in a 125-ton argon-oxygen decarburization (AOD) vessel that feeds the continuous caster. Slabs and specialty steel ingots are hot rolled on a six-stand hot strip mill for shipment to other plants.
