DC Drive System Reduces Downtime at Corus Scunthorpe Plant

Corus has reduced expensive downtime at downtime at its Scunthorpe plant in the U.K., with the installation of new Dc drives from ABB. The drives, part of ABB's Industrial IT portfolio, are delivering increased reliability for greater production consistency within the rolling mill.The Scunthorpe mill produces a variety of steel channels, angles, and beams from blooms measuring 200 mm by 200 mm. A typical rolling program comprises three passes in the roughing stand to reduce the section, followed by three further passes through the intermediate stand, where the form of the required profile is introduced. The product then passes to the finishing stands for completion before dispatch to customers.
