Exhaust gas and particulate matter from diesel engine during combustion process result in air pollution and cause health hazards to human beings, such as aggravated asthma, increases in respiratory dysfunction like coughing and hard or painful breathing, chronic bronchitis, decreased lung function and premature death. Therefore, the development of particulate matter reduction system is the most important subject. Regulations on diesel emission have been made strictly. Various methods to control marine diesel particulate matter are under development. Lin used catalyzed particulate filter, Chae used non-thermal plasma for exhaust gas treatment, and Nishida developed wet scrubber and seawater electrolysis for suppressing marine diesel gaseous and particulate emissions.
