Klaus Ruckpaul is a visionary, an optimist and a leader. As one reflects on Klaus's life experiences, it is humbling to realize the challenges he has overcome. His career developed during the difficult post-World War II period, which resulted in the division of Germany into East and West segments. Such a division served as an impediment for scientific communication and research - in particular for those scientists in the Eastern Bloc. However, Klaus survived and successfully established a focus for hemeprotein research at Berlin-Buch - in particular a group of highly qualified biophysical scientists that he gathered around him over a period of more than twenty years. Today, Klaus is recognized as a major player on the world stage of physical biochemical research of various hemeproteins, including the superfamily of proteins called cytochrome P450 (P450). The recent work of his group is known world-wide and represents an important contribution to the history of P450.
