Development of a virtual-reality horseback riding therapy system

Horseback riding therapy has been shown to help a variety of problems that afflict thc elderly. such as low-back pain, poor posture and balance difficulties, and is becoming popular in Europe and thc United States. The authors have attempted toduplicate key elements of this enjoyable sensory motor experience using mechanical and virtual-reality technologies. Actual riding motions were recorded and then a six-axis parallel drive system was developed to replicate key movements responsible forbeneficial health effects. Sound effects and actual video footage are delivered along with mechanical movement in response to rider inputs, giving the rider a virtual reality experience.
