API 618 5th Edition (the Standard) Only Specifies Minimum Requirements - More Aggressive and Innovative Approaches Can Realize Significant Savings. The new API Standard 618 (5th Edition) affects how packagers and owners design reciprocating compressor packages to avoid pulsation- and vibration-related problems. This article has three parts: Part I, in the fune issue, outlined the key changes in the new API 618 Standard relating to Pulsation and Vibration (mechanical design) control. The Standard also addresses engineering analysis of Torsional Vibration, Dynamic Skid Design and Piping System Flexibility (Thermal). These sections of the Standard are generally applied for all reciprocating compressors (including high-speed compressors) to ensure reliable operation and minimize vibration-related problems. Part 2, in this issue, addresses application issues relating to implementing pulsation and vibration engineering studies. Part 3 expands on API 618 recommendations to reduce the total life costs of the compressor package. These activities can realize significant savings to the owner and packager.
