Transformation of the pore space of compacted soils during seasonal freezing and thawing.

The role of seasonal freezing and thawing in the loosening of plough horizons and in the restoration of the volume and shape of soil pore space was analysed by the example of grey forest soils in Russia. The specific platy structure of agriculturally compacted soils during the winter season is characterized. The main indices of the improvement of soil aggregate status during the annual cycle are distinguished. The effect of autumn ploughing of compacted soils on loosening processes is considered.
