The complicated spatial distribution of contaminants in soils, the different depth of their penetration (from 10 to 120 cm and more), and a contrasting pattern of accumulation (up to three to four orders of magnitude) in different genetic horizons were investigated. The irregular accumulation of pollutants in soil is controlled by oil-holding and oil-yielding capacities of soil substrates and by the structure of soil-geochemical barriers. The accumulative (retaining oil within the soil profile) barriers are mainly represented by organo-sorptive (organic horizons of soils and peats), and mineral-sorptive barriers (sandy deposits with relatively high effective porosity). Free penetration of oil within soil was shown to be impeded by impervious barriers - almost oil-impermeable clayey substrates, especially when gleyed - which activate the lateral runoff of pollutants.
