This report presents the built-in antenna for the 5 GHz handy phone, which ought to be used in future land mobile communication system. The proposed antenna, which is a one wavelength loop, has the following merits. The impedance can be matched to 50 Ω if the distance between the loop and the ground plane is set to about 0.1 wavelength. Since the typical width of handy phones is wider than the half-wavelength (30 mm) at 5 GHz, moreover, the ground plane works as a reflector for the polarization component of the width direction. This causes the high pattern averaging gain (PAG) in the talk position. In this report, we compared the radiation characteristics of the proposed antenna with those of the other antennas: a half-wavelength patch and the whip antenna. As a result, the PAG of the proposed antenna in the talk position was about - 1 dBd, which was higher than those of the other antennas. The result demonstrates the suitability of the proposed antenna for a 5 GHz handy phone.
